Linear keypad and intercom repair in Houston typically runs between $145 and $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a worn keypad, a failed intercom board, or both. We stock Linear-compatible keypads, intercom modules, and power supplies on our trucks, so most repairs happen the same day we arrive. The usual way an owner discovers this problem is standing on the street side in the rain, punching a code that no longer works, or hearing nothing at all when a delivery driver presses the call button.
Most of the Linear keypads and intercoms we see in Houston have been on the post for eight to twelve years, which tracks with what this climate does to outdoor electronics. That’s the reality: heat, humidity, and our version of a downpour will eventually get past any weather-sealed enclosure. The good news is this is one of the more straightforward repairs we handle. Anyone who has owned a Linear system knows the brand was built to be serviceable, not disposable.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
We work on the Linear keypad and intercom lines most commonly installed across Houston: the AE-100, AE-200, and AE-500 telephone entry systems, the AK-11 and AK-21 keypads, and the older AccessBase and Access Pro series that are still hanging on plenty of gate posts in the Heights and surrounding neighborhoods. If you’re not sure which model you have, open the keypad or intercom housing. Linear prints the model number and date code on a label inside the case or on the back of the keypad faceplate. The date code is the important part for us: it tells us whether the unit predates Linear’s sealed-board redesign, which changed how we approach the repair.
A word on parts sourcing, since this matters more with Linear than most brands. There are plenty of cheap aftermarket keypads and boards floating around online that say “fits Linear” but are not built to the same sealing spec. A generic keypad’s membrane flexes differently, and around month fourteen in Houston humidity, that flex point becomes a crack. We stock genuine Linear parts and, when a quality aftermarket option makes sense, we’ll tell you exactly why we’d use it on your specific model. Every part we install carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, full stop. We’re an independent service company, not affiliated with Linear, which means we get to choose the best part for your gate, not whatever is on a factory contract.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Code works intermittently on the first or second try. This is almost always a keypad membrane starting to fail. The rubberized dome layer that sits between the buttons and the board breaks down faster in Houston’s heat, and when it does, each keypress sends a weaker signal. You’ll notice certain digits become less reliable before others.
- The intercom buzzes but no audio comes through either direction. When the speaker module fails, the system still completes its circuit, which is why you’ll get a buzz or a hum but no voice. We see this most often on AE-100 and AE-200 units that are fully exposed on the street side with no tree cover or eave protection.
- The keypad lights up but the gate won’t respond. If the relay on the control board has gone bad, the keypad still gets power and lights up, giving every signal that it’s working, but the actual command to open the gate never fires. This can be a broken relay solder joint or a shorted output leg, both of which are repairable at the board level if caught early.
- One specific button stops responding entirely. This is a dead contact in the membrane, not a programming issue. It does not matter how many times you reprogram the code; if the membrane contact under the number is gone, the signal never leaves the keypad.
- The visitor button activates the gate but rings nobody inside. On Linear systems, the visitor call button is often wired separately from the keypad logic. When the call button works but the intercom tone never reaches the house, the intercom board’s tone generator or the transformer feeding it has failed. We usually find this on systems installed before 2012, where the transformer is frequently rusted at the mounting screw.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what you can expect to pay when we come out for a Linear keypad or intercom repair in Houston.
| Repair Type | Typical Installed Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Keypad membrane or button replacement | $145 – $220 | Most common repair; same-day in most cases |
| Full keypad replacement (new Linear unit) | $220 – $330 | Includes programming and weather sealing |
| Intercom board repair or replacement | $260 – $420 | Board-level repair when the unit allows; full replacement when it doesn’t |
| Complete keypad + intercom swap | $410 – $560 | Both units replaced, new wiring pigtails, full weather sealing |
The range depends on the model, how much of the existing wiring we can save, and whether we’re doing a board-level repair or a full unit swap. Every price we quote is written down and agreed to before any work starts. No exceptions. Cody Beckman has told every tech who works with him the same thing: nobody in Houston should be surprised by the number on an invoice. The estimate we hand you is the invoice, unless you ask us to do extra work. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every keypad and intercom repair we install: if it doesn’t work right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few safe checks you can do before calling. Confirm the transformer inside the gate operator housing isn’t tripped or corroded. Verify the terminal screws on the back of the keypad are tight. If the unit runs on a backup battery, check the battery voltage; a low battery will make a Linear act half-dead and make every button seem to fail. Those checks cost you nothing but five careful minutes.
What we don’t recommend is opening the board housing and probing the circuit. Even with the gate power off, Linear keypad and intercom boards carry stored capacitor charge, and a slip with a screwdriver across the wrong two pins can turn a repairable relay into a dead board. The work also involves low-voltage wiring that runs through your gate operator controller. If you miswire the keypad input, you can backfeed the operator board and turn a $180 repair into an $800 replacement. We work on these units every day and we still take our time. If you’re in Houston and you’d rather not spend a weekend on it, call us at (361) 256-5955. We’ll tell you over the phone what we think it is and what it should cost.
FAQs
Most Linear keypads and intercoms in Houston last between 7 and 12 years before the membrane, board relays, or speaker shows real failure. Units under an awning or under tree cover usually get the upper end of that range; units in full afternoon sun usually don’t. If you’re anywhere past year eight, a replacement is probably the better investment than a board patch. Call (361) 256-5955 and we can help you decide over the phone.
Yes, in about half the cases we see, the keypad can be repaired rather than replaced. Failed membranes and corroded wire terminals are both repairable, and board-level relay solder joints can often be reflowed by hand. Whether it’s worth repairing depends on the date code on your unit and the condition of the enclosure. We’ll tell you straight which path costs less over time. Call (361) 256-5955 for an honest read on your specific unit.
A standard Linear keypad replacement takes about 45 to 60 minutes from opening the housing to re-testing the code at the street pad. A full intercom board swap runs about an hour and a half. Both are usually same-day jobs in most of the Houston neighborhoods we serve, since we stock the parts on the truck rather than ordering per job.
We stock the most common Linear keypads, intercom modules, wiring pigtails, and transformers on our trucks, so most repairs don’t need a second visit. This is one of the reasons we work on Linear systems across Houston as often as we do: the aftermarket is saturated with cheap copies, but we carry the parts that hold up. If your model needs a part we don’t have on the truck that day, we’ll order it and come back at a time that works for you.
If you have a Linear keypad or intercom on a gate in Houston that’s not working the way it used to, call (361) 256-5955. You’ll get a live person, a straight answer on price, and a repair that’s done right the first time, with the floors and the finish protected while we’re there. A gate that closes right is one less thing to think about.
