We stock and install Ghost Controls-compatible keypad and intercom parts across Houston, TX, with most keypad replacements running between $145 and $285 installed. Same-day service is available when we have the part on the truck, which is most weekdays. The typical call starts the same way: a homeowner punches in their code, the keypad beeps like it always has, but the gate doesn’t move. Or the intercom crackles, drops the connection, and suddenly the FedEx driver can’t reach anyone inside.
Here’s what we’ve learned after years of Ghost Controls service in Houston: the keypad is usually the first component to fail on an automated gate, because it’s the only part exposed to direct sun, rain, and humidity every single day. Houston’s climate is hard on outdoor electronics. The UV breaks down the keypad membrane. Moisture creeps into the housing. Ants nest behind the circuit board, which is surprisingly common in neighborhoods like the Heights and Bellaire where mature trees and garden beds sit close to gate posts. The intercom usually fails a few years later, typically at the wiring junction or the handset itself.
We’re an independent Houston gate repair company, not affiliated with Ghost Controls. What that means for you is we can be honest about which parts are worth buying OEM and which aftermarket equivalents perform just as well.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
The Ghost Controls product line shares keypad and intercom components across several series: the AXDP (dual swing), AXP1 (single swing), TSS1 (single slide), and TSD2 (dual slide) gate opener kits. If your operator was installed in the last eight years or so, there’s a strong chance the keypad is a Ghost Controls AXKPD or an older KPW series. The intercom system is typically a separate Ghost Controls telephone entry unit or a third-party unit wired into the operator’s accessory board.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Houston owners: Ghost Controls keypads from before 2019 use a different communication protocol than the current Silver Series remotes and keypads. You can’t pair a new keypad directly to an older receiver board without a compatibility adapter, and most big-box store clerks won’t know that. We check the board revision and the date code on your operator before we order or install anything. Another Houston-specific reality: keypads and intercom units mounted on unshaded west-facing posts in places like Katy or Sugar Land degrade noticeably faster than units on north-facing posts. The thermal cycling from 100-degree afternoons to humid 80-degree nights is brutal on solder joints and membrane switches. When we install a replacement on a west-facing post, we often recommend a small sun shield or relocating the unit to a shaded face of the post.
On the OEM vs. aftermarket question: for Ghost Controls keypads, the genuine OEM part is usually worth the extra $20-$40. The aftermarket universal keypads work, but the button spacing and backlighting differ, and the code-entry experience feels noticeably worse. For intercom handsets and outdoor call boxes, we’ve had good results with quality aftermarket units, particularly when the original Ghost Controls part has been discontinued or is on backorder.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Keypad beeps but won’t open the gate. The membrane switch still registers the press and gives you the confirmation beep, but the radio transmitter inside has failed or drifted off its original frequency. The code is being entered correctly; the keypad just can’t talk to the receiver anymore. This is the single most common Ghost Controls keypad failure we replace in Houston.
- Some buttons work, some don’t. The little conductive traces inside the membrane wear unevenly. The buttons you use most (usually 1, 2, and the # key) fail first. When the 4 or 6 button stops responding, it’s not a programming issue; the membrane is done.
- Keypad works only when you press very hard, or after several tries. The membrane has lost its resilience, usually from UV damage and heat. Houston sun is unkind to plastic. We see this a lot on keypads mounted without any shade cover in neighborhoods like Cypress and Spring.
- Intercom buzzes constantly, or the indoor handset rings to a dead line. A constant hum usually means a short in the wiring between the outdoor call box and the indoor handset. Moisture ingress at the outdoor unit is the typical culprit, especially after heavy rain events or in low-lying lots near the bayous.
- Intercom voice audio is garbled, or the call drops when the gate moves. This usually points to interference where the intercom wiring runs parallel to AC power wires or the gate motor harness. Grounding issues are common in older Houston homes where the original electrical panel predates current code. The intercom itself may be fine; the install wiring is often not.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a Ghost Controls keypad replacement with installation typically runs between $145 and $285, depending on whether we’re installing a basic keypad or a model with additional features like a keyfob slot or metal housing. Intercom system repair or replacement is more variable. Simple handset replacement runs $165 to $240. A full outdoor call box replacement with telephone entry can run $350 to $650, depending on whether we need to run new wiring or the existing conduit is reusable.
Every single quote includes the part, the labor, the programming, and the testing. You get a written price before we touch anything. We don’t do the thing where the “install” turns out to be a separate line item once we’re on site. The written price is the price. We park the truck, Cody Beckman or one of our techs walks the property with you, shows you the failed part and explains what we’re replacing and why, hands you a written quote, and waits. No pressure. If you say yes, we put down drop cloths if the intercom handset is inside the house, put on shoe covers, and get to work. Outdoors, we keep the work area clean and take a photo of the finished install before we leave. Every Ghost Controls repair we do is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the keypad doesn’t work right in a year, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
For keypads: you can safely check one thing yourself. Look at the keypad housing. If it’s cracked, fogged, or full of ants, that’s your diagnosis and there’s no programming trick that fixes it. A replacement is needed. For intercoms: you can check that the indoor handset is plugged into its base, and you can look at the outdoor call box for visible water damage or loose wires. Beyond that, we’d recommend stopping. The keypad and intercom wire into the same low-voltage and AC circuits as the gate operator itself. Probing around with a multimeter on a live board is how people fry a $400 control board while trying to save $25 on a service call. High-tension components aren’t the issue here, but the control boards are sensitive, and Ghost Controls boards are expensive to replace.
When a Ghost Controls keypad fails in Houston, most owners call us because they’re leaving for work and the gate won’t open. We answer the phone around the clock. Call (361) 256-5955 and tell us the symptom. If we can’t fix it over the phone, we’ll bring the part.
FAQs
In our experience across the Houston area, a Ghost Controls keypad installed without shade protection lasts three to five years before the membrane or transmitter starts to fail. Units under a covered entry or on shaded posts commonly last six to eight years. The humidity and intense summer UV are the two factors that shorten lifespan most in this climate.
We replace keypad membranes and entire keypads. Repairing the membrane itself isn’t cost-effective; the part is cheap and the labor to rebuild it is not. Intercoms are different. A bad handset, loose terminal, corroded connector, or grounded wire can often be repaired without replacing the whole system. We diagnose first and replace only what’s actually failed. Call (361) 256-5955 and we’ll give you an honest read on your specific unit.
A standard keypad swap takes 30 to 45 minutes in most Houston homes. Intercom replacement runs one to two hours if we’re reusing existing wiring, longer if we need to pull new wire or troubleshoot the operator’s accessory board. We’ll tell you the time estimate in writing before we start.
We stock common Ghost Controls keypads and intercom handsets on our trucks, plus parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing systems. For less common Ghost Controls intercom parts, we can typically source them from local Houston suppliers same-day or next-day. We stock OEM keypads and a few quality aftermarket options, and we’ll show you the price difference before you decide.
