We stock and install Ghost Controls-compatible welded brackets, gate frame reinforcements, and custom fabrication plates across Houston, with most welding and fabrication work priced between $185 and $520 installed depending on the size of the job and the gauge of steel required. If your Ghost Controls gate arm bracket tore loose from the gate frame, or the post-side mount cracked at the weld, we can usually have a technician out the same day and the gate swinging again within a few hours. The most common way Houston owners discover this failure is a gate that suddenly sounds like it’s dragging a chain across concrete, or an opener that runs but the gate barely moves because the bracket is flexing instead of transferring force.
Most Houston homeowners reach out to us after the gate has already sagged noticeably. What actually failed isn’t the Ghost Controls motor. It’s the point where the welded bracket meets the gate frame, and in Houston’s humidity, that joint corrodes from the inside out long before it becomes visible. We see it most often on older tube-steel gates in neighborhoods like Meyerland and Garden Oaks, where the original fabrication was done with lighter gauge steel than the opener arm really needs.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
Ghost Controls makes its openers in three main lines that we service regularly: the single-gate AX series, the dual-gate VX series, and the solar-ready kits that share bracket geometry with the standard units. The welding and fabrication needs differ by what’s failed. On AX and VX models, the bracket that bolts to the opener arm and welds to the gate frame is the usual problem point. On gates that were retrofitted to an existing driveway gate, we often see the post-side mounting plate start to crack at the weld after a few years of the opener pushing and pulling against it.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: Ghost Controls bolts the opener arm to its bracket with a specific spacing, and aftermarket brackets that claim to be “universal” often sit a half-inch off, which means the arm travels at a slight angle. That slight angle puts side load on the internal gears and shortens the motor’s life. When we fabricate a replacement bracket, we measure the Ghost Controls bolt pattern directly from your arm, then build to that measurement, not to whatever the parts catalog says. It’s a 15-minute difference in the driveway and it’s the difference between a bracket that lasts and one that loosens again in six months.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate lurches at the start of every cycle. That initial jerk is the arm taking up slack in a bracket that’s no longer rigid. The weld is already compromised, and the movement is only getting bigger. The longer it runs like this, the more the arm’s pivot bushing wears.
- The gate frame moves before the gate moves. You’ll see the bracket flex, then the gate follows a beat later. This happens when the weld is completely broken on one side and the bracket is hanging on by the remaining tack. It’s the most common precursor to a full detachment.
- A grinding or popping sound from the bracket area. Popping is metal-on-metal flex. Grinding means the arm is rubbing against the gate frame. Both mean the weld has failed and needs to be cut off and redone, not just re-tightened.
- Rust streaks running from the bracket. In Houston’s humidity, rust streaks are the weld weeping. We see this on gates near Braes Bayou and anywhere with standing morning moisture. The steel is oxidizing behind the paint, which means the weld strength is degrading, not just the finish.
- Gate sag at the latch side. When the opener-side bracket fails, the gate’s weight shifts. The hinges are already doing more work than they should, and you’ll notice the latch no longer lines up cleanly with the post. By the time it sags, the weld has been failing for weeks.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a bracket replacement with welding on a Ghost Controls opener typically runs $185 to $285 when we’re cutting off one failed bracket, welding on a fresh steel plate, and remounting the arm. If the gate frame itself has split at the weld or needs reinforcement plate work to prevent the failure from recurring, that pushes the job into the $320 to $520 range because we’re fabricating and gusseting, not just swapping a part.
- Labor: Includes cutting off the old bracket, grinding the surface clean, and testing the gate under load before we leave.
- Steel stock: We use quarter-inch plate for post-side brackets and heavy-gauge mild steel for arm mounts, because anything thinner will fail again in Houston’s humidity.
- Paint and corrosion protection: The welded area is primed and painted to match, so the repair point doesn’t become the next rust point.
- Remounting and alignment: The Ghost Controls arm gets re-bolted to its factory pattern, and the gate is cycled through open and close at least a dozen times to confirm the arm isn’t fighting the bracket.
You’ll see the full price in writing before any work starts, every visit, no exceptions. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the weld and the fabrication work. If the bracket fails within a year because of how we installed it, we come back and make it right, no argument and no fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check yourself: whether the bracket bolts are loose (you can snug them with a wrench), whether the gate is visibly sagging, and whether the arm is sitting at an angle to the bracket. Those are five-minute looks that help you describe the failure to us over the phone.
What you should not do yourself is attempt to re-weld a gate bracket unless you have experience welding on gate steel. This isn’t a decorative weld. A gate arm bracket carries repeated cyclic load every time the gate cycles, and an undercut or cold weld will fail suddenly, usually at the worst possible moment. If you’re working with Ghost Controls equipment and the bracket has separated, call us at (361) 256-5955. We’ll get someone out, quote the work, and you’ll know the number before we strike an arc.
FAQs
On a properly fabricated quarter-inch steel bracket with good paint coverage, we expect eight to twelve years in the Houston climate before corrosion or fatigue becomes a concern. The welds fail sooner than that when the original install used thinner gauge steel, or when the gate has been hit by a car, a storm, or years of hard pushing by hand. If the weld is already cracked, it won’t heal itself, and it will only get more expensive to fix as the surrounding metal stretches and tears.
Sometimes, yes. If the bracket itself is solid and the weld has failed cleanly, we can grind the old weld out and re-weld the same bracket with proper penetration and a gusset for reinforcement. That’s the lowest cost repair and usually lands in the $185 to $240 range. If the bracket is bent, thinned by rust, or has torn out a chunk of gate frame, a new fabricated bracket is the right call. We’ll show you which one you have before you spend a dollar, and the quote is always in writing before the work begins.
Most single-bracket welding and fabrication repairs on a Ghost Controls opener take between 90 minutes and three hours on site. That includes cutting the old bracket off, cleaning the surface, welding the new piece in, letting the weld cool enough to paint, and cycling the gate to confirm alignment. If the gate frame needs significant reinforcement work, plan for half a day. You’ll get a time estimate on the phone before we schedule the visit.
Our trucks carry steel plate and flat stock to fabricate the most common Ghost Controls bracket sizes on site. We keep the standard AX and VX bolt patterns in the truck log and we can match your existing bracket’s geometry while we’re in the driveway. If you have an odd mounting situation or a gate that needs a custom offset, we’ll fabricate that in the shop and schedule the install once the steel work is done. Either way, you get a written price before we touch anything.
