DoorKing Access Control Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DoorKing-compatible access control parts across Houston, and most installations run between $180 and $520, including the part, wiring, and labor. We carry DoorKing keypads, telephone entry systems, card readers, and replacement circuit boards on our trucks, so we usually complete the swap the same day we arrive. The typical way owners find us: the keypad works sometimes, the gate opens for one code but not another, or the system stopped recognizing remotes after a storm. You’ll get a written price before we touch anything, and every job is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

We install access control on the DoorKing series that Houston homeowners and small HOAs actually run: the 1830, 1834, 1835, and 1837 gate operator lines, plus the 1812 and 1814 telephone entry systems that often sit at the front of those installs. Latch & Post Gate Repair is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DoorKing directly, so our compatibility knowledge comes from field work rather than a dealer brochure.

The fastest way to confirm what you have is to open the control box and look at the board. The DoorKing model number is printed on the PCB itself, usually near the terminal strip, in white silkscreen. If the board is an 8068-080 or 8068-080 Rev X, that’s the older 1830-era platform. If you see 8080-010 or similar, you’re on the newer 1834/1835 generation. The difference matters because the old boards use screw-terminal accessory connections and the new ones use a mix of screw terminals and plug-in headers, and a keypad wired for one does not simply drop onto the other. One more gotcha we see in Houston regularly: DoorKing 1812 keypads love to hold water after our humid summers, and the ribbon cable pins corrode green. That corrosion, not the keypad itself, is often the real reason for dead or intermittent buttons.

We generally recommend OEM DoorKing parts for control boards and safety-edge modules, because the board talks to everything else on the operator. For keypads and readers, quality aftermarket equivalents like simple Wiegand-output keypads work well and cost less, but only if you install them with the proper output format match. DoorKing boards expect 26-bit Wiegand from access readers. If an aftermarket reader doesn’t deliver that format, the system will not recognize the card. We always verify the reader output before we finish.

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • The keypad beeps, but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad processor may be fine, but the output relay or the wiring to the operator input is compromised. On the DoorKing 1834, we test the relay first and then the terminal block, because vibration at the gate frame often loosens those connections first.
  • Codes work only when it’s cool outside. Houston heat builds resistance in aging solder joints on older 1830 boards. The system expands and contracts with our temperature swings, and a board that acts dead in August can behave at midnight. That intermittent behavior usually points to the board, not the keypad.
  • Some remotes work, others don’t. DoorKing systems separate access device inputs, so a dead telephone entry system won’t stop remotes, but a failing board can. If one code drops while another holds, the access controller channel is likely failing, typically from moisture ingress at the case gasket.
  • You smell something warm near the control box. A failing power transformer or burnt relay gives off a distinct warm or acrid smell. Shut off power to the operator at the breaker and call us so we can inspect it. Once a door king power supply starts to go, it can take out the board if it shorts hard.
  • The gate opens and closes on its own. This often means a stuck request, not a ghost. A shorted loop detector input or a corroded reader can send a constant open command. We check the loop first and then the reader input.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

DoorKing access control installation in Houston typically runs $180 to $520 installed, depending on the part. Here’s the structure:

  • Replacement keypad: $180 to $290 installed for a DoorKing 1812-style keypad or a properly matched aftermarket Wiegand unit. The part difference is small, but this price includes time to clean the existing wiring or run new cable if the old run is brittle.
  • New telephone entry system: $350 to $520 installed for a DoorKing 1814 depending on whether you want the phone line version or a cellular-capable unit. That’s installed, not just a part drop at your door.
  • Control board replacement: $190 to $390 installed for DoorKing 1830-series boards. Boards are easy for us to swap, but programming the limits and access device mapping takes time, and that’s included.

Every quote includes the part, the time to remove the old unit, installation, wiring cleanup, programming, and testing. We write the price down before we begin, and if the final invoice is a dollar more than what we wrote, that’s on us. The 365-Day Done Right Promise means if the install is wrong, we fix it, no argument. If you need a cost question answered without committing to anything, call (361) 256-5955 and ask for Cody.

DIY or Call Us?

The safest thing a Houston owner can check is the power at the outlet or breaker that feeds the gate operator, plus the state of the keypad cable where it exits the wall or gooseneck. If you see cracked insulation or green corrosion at the connector, don’t tug at it. You can also do a visual check of the board for swollen capacitors, which look like little cylinders pushing up a dome at the top.

What we don’t recommend doing yourself is working on the board or wiring while the operator has power. DoorKing units carry 16 to 24 volts AC at the board, but the transformer itself connects to 120-volt household current, and a wrong touch near the supply side can hurt. There’s also no safe way to trace a short on a DoorKing board without a meter and without removing the accessory wiring one at a time. If you’re not sure where the short is, please let a trained technician do the diagnostic. It takes us less time than it takes most people to find the manual, and you’ll know the job is done right under our promise. Call (361) 256-5955 if you have questions before you call anyone else.
