Get your free estimateElite Access Control Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Elite access control installation in Houston typically runs between $650 and $1,900 installed, depending on whether you need a keypad, card reader, or full telephone-entry system wired into an Elite gate operator. We stock Elite-compatible control components on our trucks, and most installations are completed the same day we arrive. Most homeowners discover their access control has failed the hard way: a keypad that works in the morning and goes blank by afternoon, a card reader that beeps but won’t release the gate, or a power surge after a Houston thunderstorm that takes the whole entry system down with it.
What gets protected in your home matters on a job like this. We lay drop cloths before opening any indoor control cabinet, and every wire pull is routed clean so nothing snags on a mower or a kid’s bike later. A control system that’s installed right doesn’t just open a gate. It keeps your dog in the yard, it lets your teenager in without a house key, and it means you’re not standing in the rain punching a dead keypad at 9 p.m.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite access control pairs with the SL-3000 and SL-2000 slide gate operators most often, along with the CSW-200 swing gate operators we service across Houston. The key thing to know about Elite is that their control boards use a 24-volt accessory circuit, which means not every generic keypad on Amazon will fire correctly. A keypad built for a 12-volt swing system will act dead or intermittent when wired into an Elite board, and we’ve replaced enough of those mismatches in neighborhoods from Memorial to Pearland that we check voltage first, always.
When we need to identify the right part, we look for the model sticker on the underside of the control enclosure or the printed number on the board itself. Elite boards are labeled clearly, usually starting with “EL” followed by the series number. For most Houston homes we recommend the OEM Elite keypad or a proven compatible unit from DoorKing or Linear, because the wiring harness and mounting pattern are already matched. Aftermarket replacements can work, but for Elite specifically, the board’s accessory power output means a cheap keypad often fails within a year in Houston heat. We’d rather install the part that lasts.
One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Elite operators manufactured before 2015 use a slightly different harness connector on the control board. If your opener was installed when areas like Katy and The Woodlands were still building out heavily, and the harness looks original, we may need a short adaptation lead. We keep those adapters on the truck.

Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad works, then goes dead for minutes or hours. This usually points to a failing power supply on the Elite board, not the keypad itself. Houston’s voltage spikes during storm season are hard on those capacitors, and they degrade gradually until the accessory circuit can’t hold steady power.
- Card reader beeps but the gate doesn’t move. The reader is getting power and reading the card, but the relay signal isn’t reaching the limit switch input. Loose terminal connections, common after seasons of gate vibration, are the usual cause.
- You have to enter the code twice, or the gate opens after a delay. This is a relay that’s sticking or a board that’s slow to trigger. It’s repairable, but it means the control relay is on its way out.
- Exterior keypad housing is cracked or filling with water. Houston’s wet season plus direct sun dries out the plastic housings faster than most manufacturers expect. Once water reaches the membrane, codes start behaving erratically.
- Phone-entry or intercom works for cars, but not from a distance. Antenna or receiver degradation, often compounded by nearby metal roofing or a poorly placed transmitter. We relocate and test before replacing anything.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, expect to pay between $650 and $1,900 for most Elite access control installations. A basic keypad replacement with handset programming lands on the lower end. A full card reader system with multiple credentials, or a telephone-entry unit wired into an Elite operator, runs higher. We’ll hand you a written price before any work starts, and that number is the number. No adjuster comes back later with a surprise.
What’s included in that installed price: the part itself, all wiring and connectors, programming and testing, and a walk-through so you know how to add or remove codes yourself. We also inspect the operator’s limit settings while we’re there, because a control system that works perfectly won’t matter if the gate itself is out of adjustment. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the whole installation. If the access control acts up within a year, we come back and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things on your own: confirm the keypad lights up, look for visible corrosion at the control board, and make sure no wires have been pulled loose from the terminals where the gate arm connects. What you should not do is open the Elite control enclosure with power live and start swapping wires. The control board handles 120-volt line voltage in addition to the 24-volt accessory circuit, and a wrong touch can damage the board or you. That’s the honest version.
Where DIY usually goes wrong on Elite systems is grounding. We see boards that fail six months after a homeowner install because the ground wasn’t tied back properly, and Houston soil plus lightning season does the rest. We’d rather come do it once, correctly. Call (361) 256-5955 and we’ll walk you through what you’re seeing before we even send a truck.
FAQs
You should get 7 to 10 years from an Elite access control installation in Houston before components start failing, though the keypad membrane may need replacing around year 5 if the unit faces direct afternoon sun. Heat and humidity are the main shortening factors, which is why we mount everything with a small air gap where possible. Call (361) 256-5955 if yours is acting early, and we’ll tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
Yes, in most cases. Failed keypads, worn relays, and corroded terminal connections can often be repaired or replaced at the component level for $150 to $450, which is far less than a full system replacement. We only recommend a full swap when the board itself is compromised or the system is old enough that chasing individual failures stops being cost-effective.
A straightforward keypad or card reader installation on an Elite operator takes one to two hours, including programming and testing. A full telephone-entry system with new wire runs and conduit may take four to six hours. We’ll give you a time window when you book, and we’ll update you if anything changes.
We keep the most common Elite keypad and replacement board components on the truck, along with adapters for older harness connectors. If your system needs a less common part, we can typically have it in hand within one to two business days. Call (361) 256-5955 with your model number and we’ll confirm before we arrive.
A gate that closes right is one less thing to think about. That’s as true for the access control as it is for the gate itself.
