We stock and install BFT-compatible access control components across Houston, and a typical installation runs $450 to $1,400 depending on the keypad, card reader, or intercom module your system needs. Most BFT access control replacements we handle can be completed same week, and we carry the common BFT reader and board configurations on the truck so we’re not chasing parts across town. The way owners usually discover a failing access control unit is simple: the keypad works sometimes, the card reader stops reading, or the gate opens fine from the remote but won’t respond at the keypad at all. That’s the part that tells your BFT operator who is allowed in, and when it starts flaking out, the gate becomes either too open or too closed, and neither one feels right for a family with kids and a dog coming and going.
Named for owner Cody Beckman’s practice of treating every gate as two things, a latch and a post, our Houston shop has worked on BFT operators in the Heights, Meyerland, Cypress, and out toward Katy. We understand the specific BFT control board generations because we’ve replaced enough of them to know which firmware pairs with which keypad, and which wiring mistakes show up six months later as corrosion behind the keypad face.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT has been building gate operators and access systems in Italy for over 40 years, and in Houston we most often see their sliding and swing gate lines: the DEIMOS, PHOBOS, ICARO, and SUB series operators paired with BFT’s own keypads and readers like the MITTO keypad, the CLONIX remote system, and the RIGEL card reader line. Your access control installation is the human-facing piece of that setup: the keypad or reader at the driveway, the control board inside the operator housing, and the wiring that connects them.
Identifying your exact part matters because BFT changed connector styles across generations. A RIGEL 5 reader will not plug into a control board designed for the older RIGEL 3, and the wire colors don’t line up neatly, which is exactly the kind of gotcha that turns a one-hour job into an afternoon of tracing leads. When you call us, we’ll ask you to open the operator cover (with the power off, and we’ll walk you through it) and read us the model label. That label tells us which generation system we’re working with, and whether an OEM BFT part or a quality aftermarket equivalent makes sense for your setup. For BFT specifically, we lean OEM on control boards, because aftermarket boards rarely hold their timing settings in Houston’s heat and humidity. For keypads and readers, the aftermarket options have gotten genuinely good, and we’ll tell you when the price difference is worth it.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad works only on the third or fourth press. The membrane keypad contacts are wearing through from UV exposure and rain. Houston sun is hard on BFT keypads, especially west-facing mounts in the afternoon. The fix is a new keypad face or full reader, not a cleaning.
- Card reader flashes green but the gate doesn’t move. The reader is reading, but the relay signal isn’t reaching your control board. This is commonly a wiring issue where the heat has cooked a connector or a mouse has chewed the low-voltage line inside the conduit. We trace it, and we do it faster when we know which reader you have.
- Keypad works from inside the property but not from the street. The keypad transmitter antenna or the board’s receiving circuit has degraded. BFT boards age differently in coastal air, and if you’re down toward Clear Lake or Dickinson, salty humidity accelerates capacitor wear on these boards more than you’d expect.
- Gate opens randomly at odd hours. A failing BFT receiver board can interpret stray radio signals as a valid open command, especially if you live near an industrial corridor or cell tower. We’ll check the antenna placement and receiver sensitivity before we replace anything unnecessarily.
- The intercom buzzes, but you can’t hear who’s at the gate. Your access control installation includes the audio path from the call station to the inside handset. BFT intercom modules have small electrolytic capacitors that dry out in Texas heat, and once they fail, the audio gets thin and crackly.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a BFT access control installation or replacement runs from $450 for a basic keypad swap up to $1,400 for a full keypad-plus-control-board replacement with reprogramming. The range is driven by which BFT generation you have, whether we’re doing a single keypad or a keypad with intercom, and whether the existing wiring can be reused. Conduit and pull wire add cost when the old line has been chewed or corroded, which we see regularly in Houston’s older neighborhoods with mature tree root systems.
The written quote you get before any work starts includes the part, the labor, the programming, and the testing. There is no surprise line item after the fact. That’s just how we do business at Latch and Post. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation: if something isn’t right a month or six months later, we make it right without an argument. BFT also covers their own electronic components under their own warranty, and we’ll help you register for that if you’re using OEM parts.
DIY or Call Us?
Because this is an electrical and wiring job, we recommend a trained professional handle the replacement. Your BFT access control installation carries low-voltage power, but it also touches the high-voltage side if the operator has a battery backup or a direct line from the house. You can safely check a few things yourself before calling: look for physical damage to the keypad face, confirm the breaker isn’t tripped, and note whether the failure is constant or intermittent. But opening the operator box and swapping a control board is where an owner can get hurt or can fry a new $400 board in five seconds with a crossed wire.
Cody and our Houston crew have been inside enough BFT operators to know exactly what to test before we replace anything. He sometimes says a gate that closes right is one less thing to think about, and for families with a dog that pushes gates and a kid who left the gate open, that’s not just a phrase. If your keypad is flaking out, call (361) 256-5955 and we’ll sort out what you actually need. We often save owners money by replacing the one failing component instead of the whole system.
FAQs
A BFT keypad or card reader in Houston typically lasts 7 to 10 years outdoors, but a control board can go 10 to 15 years if the box stays sealed and dry. Exposure, salt air, and afternoon sun shorten those numbers. Call (361) 256-5955 if you’re seeing intermittent failures and we’ll give you a straight read on whether it’s worth repairing or replacing.
Yes, often. Keypads can sometimes be rebuilt with new membranes, and control boards can occasionally be saved with a capacitor swap. We’ll tell you honestly when a repair makes sense and when replacement is the better use of your money. Call (361) 256-5955 and we’ll talk through what you’re seeing.
Most BFT access control installations we do in Houston take 2 to 4 hours, including programming and testing. If we’re replacing wiring or running new conduit, plan for a full day. We’ll give you a written time estimate before we start, and we’ll work around nap time and pet schedules when we can. Call (361) 256-5955 to schedule.
We stock the common BFT keypads, readers, and control boards on our trucks, plus compatible aftermarket equivalents. For older BFT generations we may need to order a specific board, and we’ll tell you that before you pay anything. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. Call (361) 256-5955 and we’ll check our truck inventory while you’re on the line.
