If you have a Linear access control system that has stopped reading keypads, dropped a card reader offline, or simply quit triggering the gate, we install and replace Linear-compatible access control equipment across Houston, typically for $280 to $640 installed depending on the part and wiring condition. Most single-part swaps run one to two hours once we’re on site, and we keep common Linear boards, keypads, and readers on the truck. The telltale sign is usually straightforward: you enter the code, hear a click or nothing at all, and the gate does not move.
What we see most often in Houston is not a dead board but a tired one. Humidity gets into outdoor enclosures, ants build nests across terminal strips, and after a few summers the keypad membrane flexes but no longer registers reliably. The gate operator itself is fine. The access control side just stopped listening.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear access control splits into two families that Houston homeowners actually have: the AE series telephone entry and keypad units (AE-100, AE-500, AE-1000, AE-2000) and the AK series keypads (AK-11, AK-21, and the older AK-1/AK-9 we still find on wood fences in the Heights and Garden Oaks), plus the MegaCode receivers that pair with Linear’s handheld transmitters. The compatibility gotcha: a MegaCode receiver will not talk to an older Multi-Code transmitter, and the reverse is true. Before you order anything, flip the unit over and read the label. If you cannot find a model number, open the enclosure (power off first if it is wired to mains) and look at the circuit board. The model is almost always silkscreened near the relay.
We install OEM Linear parts when the system is clean and the owner plans to keep the property long term. For older discontinued AE-100s, we often recommend a quality aftermarket direct-mount keypad that matches the existing mounting holes and relay logic, because the OEM replacement has been out of production for years and used units on eBay are a gamble. You should know that Latch and Post Gate Repair Houston is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Linear or Nortek, and a factory warranty claim goes through them, not us.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Intermittent entry from the keypad. You punch in the code and sometimes the gate opens, sometimes it does not. This is nearly always a failing membrane keypad or a cold solder joint on the relay, not the operator. The spring inside the keypad button wears out, and Houston humidity accelerates the corrosion inside the enclosure.
- A relay click with no gate movement. The keypad accepts the code and clicks, but the gate ignores it. The relay contact is pitted or the wiring between the access control and the operator’s input terminal has corroded at a splice. The fix is the part, not the wiring harness, in about seven of ten cases we see in Houston.
- Continuous beeping or a stuck button. A keypad that beeps on its own or registers a code as “8888” has water inside the housing. Rain blowback through an unsealed conduit or a cracked faceplate does this. It will not dry out and return to normal; the membrane is shot.
- Works from the transmitter but not the keypad. This is the cleanest diagnostic: if the handheld remote opens the gate, the operator is fine. The access control input or the keypad itself has failed, and the part to replace is the access component, not the gate motor.
- No response from a wired keypad after a lightning storm. Houston thunderstorms kill access control boards through the low-voltage wiring run along a fence line. A surge doesn’t have to hit the main panel. A nearby strike induces enough voltage on the keypad cable to fry the input protection diode.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a standard Linear keypad or reader replacement lands between $180 and $320 installed. A full access control board with wiring verification runs $280 to $460. A complete swap-out to a new keypad plus receiver module on an older operator typically runs $320 to $550 when we have to pull new low-voltage wiring. The range depends on three things: how far the keypad sits from the operator, whether the conduit is still usable, and whether the old unit was installed on a masonry column or a wood post. Masonry takes longer and requires proper anchors that will not crack the stone.
Every estimate includes the written price before we start, the part, the labor, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the install is not right, we make it right. No argument, no fine print. You will see the exact number in writing before we touch a screwdriver, and there is never a surprise invoice at the end.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check two things on your own. First, confirm the keypad is wired with the correct polarity. A reversed positive and negative will not usually damage a Linear keypad but it will not power up either. Second, check that the door or cover is seated fully, because most Linear outdoor units have a tamper switch that disables input when the enclosure is slightly ajar. Beyond those checks, we would not recommend bench-level work on an access control board. These units connect to your gate operator’s control inputs and in some cases to mains voltage at the transformer, and a wiring mistake can take out the operator board too. A $40 keypad becomes a $700 operator repair quickly.
If you are in Houston and the keypad has stopped responding, call us at (361) 256-5955 and we will tell you over the phone whether it sounds like the keypad, the receiver, or the wiring. Then we will quote the job before we book the visit.
FAQs
We typically see five to eight years from an outdoor Linear keypad in Houston before the membrane or the board fails, and the failure is usually tied to humidity intrusion rather than component wear. Units mounted under a covered porch or inside a gate enclosure often last ten years or more.
For membrane keypads, no. Once the faceplate loses its seal or the circuit trace corrodes, the unit is a replacement, not a repair. For AE-series telephone entry boards, we can sometimes replace a burned relay or fuses, and that is the one situation where a board repair is more economical than a swap. Cody Beckman will tell you straight which one you are looking at before any work is authorized.
Most single-unit Linear access control replacements in Houston take between one and two hours once the technician is on site. If we are pulling new low-voltage wire along a fence line or through existing conduit, add another hour, and we will tell you that before we start.
Yes. We carry common Linear keypads, MegaCode receivers, and the most frequently needed AE-series boards on our service vehicles, along with parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems you may also have on the property. If a part is not on the truck, we can almost always have it installed within two to three business days.
If your Linear access control has gone quiet, call us at (361) 256-5955. A live person answers, day or night, and we will give you a straight answer and a written price before we do anything else. We will put on shoe covers before we walk through your yard or your home, lay drop cloths where we work, and send you a photo of the clean-up before we leave. A gate that closes right is one less thing to think about.
